The Gadgets These 4 Startup Founders Are Hoping To Find In Their Xmas Stockings
This festive season, we peeked into the stockings of 4 innovative startup founders to find out!
Happy 2023! We asked some of the brightest tech entrepreneurs what their 2023 new year’s resolutions are? And what tech innovation is underrated — what should we all be paying more attention to?
He is the managing director of Volucap, a volumetric motion capture company that opened Germany’s first ever volumetric studio in 2018.
It would have to be volumetric video capture — aka Volucaps. This captures an environment in a way which can be rendered either in 3D (as with VR) or on a flat surface. It matters because it will eventually become the core technology for future content creation. Accordingly, Volucaps changes how we communicate and enables us to interact with real photorealistic humans who can move around spatial environments.
To keep up my pace of work, spend less time with stalling companies in a dying economy and to continue to build relationships with true pioneers.
He is the head of hubraum.
I believe the most underrated tech innovation right now is innovation in the convergent area of nanotechnology, biotechnology, and information technology.
Why am I excited about the overlap between these three areas? Because of the huge potential they have when combined. After all, they enable everything from brain-computer interfaces (allowing us to carry out IT work purely through brain waves) to the extension of human life by advancements in healthcare. I expect major breakthroughs in this decade which could have tremendous positive effects for healthcare and society.
To stay curious, because the pace of innovation is always accelerating. Plus, to push myself outside of my comfort zone. After all, this is the only way to learn something new every day. I intend to invite others to give me more feedback and dish out more feedback myself. Why? Because feedback helps to improve my behaviour, and enables my team to perform better.
She is an agile coach and social tech entrepreneur who was voted one of “40 over 40 – Germany’s most inspiring women” in 2022. Vidya was also formerly the CEO of Givetastic, an AI-powered social enterprise.
Virtual reality or the Metaverse. I know that the Metaverse sounds more like a fad than it does a reality, but I believe that Covid-19 has ushered in a new age. We mostly work remotely and according to a venture capitalist, we are already in a phase of constant digital communication. The next step of that is the visual representation of it, like having your own avatar. So, watch this space.
I am big fan of scrum (agile software development framework) and I like the idea of adopting this agile way of working and deploying it in my private life. For example, I want to work in sprints (two weeks) and focus on a particular goal for every sprint. I also want to reflect on my progress and what I need to do better the next time, just like you would in a sprint retrospective.
He is the managing director and co-founder of mixed.world — a startup which uses mixed reality to enhance business processes.
Machine learning for XR, AR and MR. The brilliant research and development conducted in this field is probably the most important element for making persistent virtual content available on affordable consumer hardware today.
Being able to use your smartphone and smart-glasses to enrich your environment with all kinds of virtual 3D elements which stay in place and look and feel like they are part of the actual environment is mind-blowing. The combination of a trained AI model based on millions of datapoints along with a modern chip design allows you to run complex computer vision algorithms to comprehend your environment and enact segmentation in real time! Also things like visual marker-free hand tracking, face tracking and body tracking builds on this tech innovation.
To focus, develop, release. 2022 was an incredibly successful year – but one in which we tried to tackle too many new goals at the same time. To make sure mixed.world can grow in a healthy way in 2023, we will focus on one goal at a time. As such, we’ll ensure we deliver the best mixed reality applications for our clients.
He is the senior director of the XR and Metaverse department at Deutsche Telekom.
AI advances such as Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) and Transformer based networks. Although these are considered nerdy by some, they are overtly influencing content creation tools and capabilities to extend pre-existing media into new contexts.
To maximize my ability to enable the success of my colleagues.
He is a Director of Product Management for Snapdragon Spaces at Qualcomm.
Simplicity tends to be underrated. Often our solutions for mainstreaming XR technology are to make it more feature-rich but that adds complexity, leading us further away from natural intuitive operation for the uninitiated to grasp. What might feel boring or basic to the experienced XR guru may end up being the key solutions for unlocking the mass market.
For the world to see our fully realized vision. There’s a key piece of XR technology we’ve been pioneering here at Qualcomm that we plan to finally deliver at scale. That also means I’ll be focused on the global expansion of my team to support developers in multiple regions.
